Martyrs of Pariacoto

Father Michał Tomaszek and Father Zbigniew Strzałkowski were missionaries of the Franciscan Province of Cracow (OFMConv). They served God and the people with love to the point of giving their lives on August 9, 1991, in the town of Pariacoto in the Peruvian Andes. Terrorists of the ‘Shining Path’, the Communist Party of Peru, murdered them, claiming that ‘they humiliate people by giving out food received from imperialists; religion is the opiate of the people; and that preaching peace and doing works of evangelisation and charity lull the people in order to restrain the masses from a revolutionary uprising’. The martyrs are buried at the parish church at Pariacoto.
